Web artists all express themselves
by means of computer technology and communicate
through the internet. Computer technology, used
by most young artists, allows to work with the highest
possible degree of flexibility and an endless number
of variables, thus making it possible to create
particularly interesting works from both a creative
and a semantic point of view.
On the other hand, being the internet the fastest
and cheapest means of communication, it is also
the most relevant one and can be seen and used by
young generations.
With this concept in mind, and through the cooperation
between Riccardo Baldassarri and the cultural association
Acquamarina, the idea for the international digital
visual arts competition “The Brain Project”
saw the light with the aim of collecting and channelling
the best artistic works through the internet.
The competition is addressed to artists using digital
media with no limitations in terms of technique
adopted (painting, photography, graphic design etc),
provided that they are created or completed by means
of computer processing techniques.
A specially dedicated website has been devised (www.thebrainproject.eu)
as the only channel allowing access to the information
and the activities concerning the competition: from
the publication of the notice of competition to
the application and voting procedures; from a list
of the thirty best works to the creation and access
to the virtual gallery.
Works ranging in the “top 30” will be
displayed in Trieste and published in the competition
magazine. “The Brain Project” 2007 edition
envisages the identification of an “absolute
winner” who will be offered the chance to
mount a personal exhibition at “The Brain
Project – 2008”, publish a short monograph
in next year’s exhibition magazine, be a member
of the jury in the 2008 edition.
The second edition of “The Brain Project”
testifies the interest of many artists in this form
of art and in this initiative.
The competition logo is a sketch by Leonardo Da
Vinci representing a horse head, a symbol of creativity.
We hope it will be of good omen.
Works will be on display at the State Library in
Trieste from 23rd November to 5th December 2007.

THE BRAIN PROJECT
In a region characterised by high quality cultural
events stimulating artistic expression in many ways,
the international digital visual art competition “The
Brain Project” – with its highly innovative
elements – is of great importance.
Regional authorities devote a great deal of attention
to culture as a whole. However, they are particularly
interested in artists who encourage innovation by
channelling their talent and technical skills into
new and unexplored forms of expression.
Their interest is motivated by and consistent with
the overall strategy underlying institutional actions
aimed at encouraging research, innovation and experimentation
processes in every sector, thus allowing the acquisition
of added value necessary to accelerate social, cultural,
economic and territorial development.
Thanks to its contents and strategy, “The Brain
Project – 2007” attracted participants
from different countries who enhanced a form of expression
bridging art and technology. The arduous selection
process, carried out by a qualified jury, allowed
the identification of the thirty best works forming
the exhibition, a tool for the cultural growth of
society as a whole.
Therefore I would like to express my warmest thanks
to the cultural association Acquamarina for their
commitment and efforts in the organisation of this
event and their contribution to the cultural development
of the region.

Councillor for Education, Culture, Sport and Peace
of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region
